Fox Frontier Bivvy Range Review

The superb Frontier range have taken the bivvy market by storm in 2021!

Introducing The Frontier Bivvy Range from Fox

The Frontier Bivvy range from Fox has now been available since early in 2021 after a lengthy wait due largely to the global pandemic which has affected all manner of goods being shipped from production sites in China. This market leading bivvy has certainly made quite an impact due to its many features and upgrades on previous Fox bivvy models, but what really sets it apart from the numerous competitors in what has become a very crowded marketplace? We will try to identify and outline some key features and differences between the three available models within this feature to try and help you make an informed choice if you are looking for a top-end upgrade on your current bivvy or shelter.

Superb Build Quality and Features

Make no mistake, the Frontier in its various guises is not a cheap shelter, with prices starting at £499 for the standard Frontier model, going right up to £599 for the flagship XD model. However, we feel that the price really does reflect the superb build quality and features that each model offers and that you would come to expect from one of the leading tackle brands in the world today. The material used on the Frontier range is the much-lauded Ven-Tec fabric, which boasts an incredible 20,000 hydrostatic head rating and is incredibly breathable yet strong and lightweight. Although the breathability is very impressive, as with any bivvy on the market you can suffer from slight condensation on very cold nights or in damp conditions, but Fox have this covered with the option of an additional Vapour Peak or full overwrap to all but eliminate this potential issue.

Of course, this adds further cost to the set-up but if you are a serious session or indeed Winter angler then these are a certainly a consideration for you. As the titles suggest, the Vapour Peak is an additional ‘cap’ which covers the top of the shelter whilst also adding some additional coverage at the front of the bivvy which is really handy if the wind is blowing rain directly at you for example. The full overwrap does exactly that, covers the bivvy completely as a second skin which not only adds significant warmth in the Winter months but also aids keeping the bivvy cooler in extreme heat. Another superb feature on all 3 Frontier models are the rear mesh mozzi panels which are finished in a really smart camo mesh design. These facilitate superb air flow through the bivvy during hot weather sessions, and are also included on the overwraps (Frontier X and XD models only) but only in the panels either side of the front door and not in the rear section as in the actual bivvy.

Lightweight Bivvy with Quick Set-Up and Pack Down

Some other key features of note are the super-quick set up and pack down time and also the weight of each model. Despite being a full bivvy system, the largest XD model comes in at under 15kg which is pretty impressive considering the size of the shelter and all of the extras included. The Frontier bivvies all utilise the superb ETS (Easy Tension System) central boss which is the attachment point for the reinforced lightweight aluminium spokes which form the external frame of the bivvy. Once unpacked properly, erection time is literally a minute or two which makes the Frontier ideal for short sessions or longer stays alike. Once set up and properly pegged out, they will withstand all but the very strongest winds that we are likely to encounter, even in our crazy climate!

The Frontier Bivvy – Wrap Up

All in all, these are a seriously impressive bit of kit, and well worth serious consideration if you are looking for a high quality, versatile bivvy that has all bases covered. For the complete specifications on each model, have a read of the following details for each of the 3 models and associated products.
